In Buddhist culture, the elephant is a symbol of strength and steadfastness. At the beginning of ones journey to enlightenment, the uncontrolled mind is symbolized by the grey elephant who can run wild any moment and destroy everything in its path. After taming the mind, and controlling your thoughts, the mind is symbolized by the white elephant. Now that strength and power can be directed towards whatever one wishes to destroy, helping to remove impediments along our spiritual path to Enlightenment.
