Just before the Buddha realized enlightenment after 49 days of meditation, the demon Mara attacked him with armies of monsters to frighten the Buddha from his seat under the Body tree. Mara claimed the seat of enlightenment for himself, proclaiming that his spiritual accomplishments were far greater than the Buddha’s. Mara challenged the Buddha “Who will speak for you?” The Buddha simply reached out his right hand and touched the earth, and she roared “I bear you witness!”
