He is based on a Chinese wondering monk who lived over 1000 years ago and became a fundamental part of Buddhist and Shinto culture. The Hotei Buddha is almost always depicted carrying a cloth or linen sack which never empties, and is filled with precious items such as a rice plant which is symbolic of wealth, and candy for children.
